I actually was one that thought Callahan played the USC game last
year exactly right. To me at that point in the season it would have
served no purpose to open up the play book and potentially get our back
ends handed to us. I really believe that is what would have happened
had Callahan gone in to win the game. Callahan had a team that
potentially could be pretty good. At least this way the team had the
feeling they could play with the likes of USC. Getting blown out would
serve no purpose. There was no way NU could win that game anyway unless
Pete Carroll and his entire first two units were suspended for the game
because of some kind of misconduct. Under those circumstances I believe
it was a lot better to cut your losses and get out of town. Now if that
game were later in the season and/or a conference game I wouldn't feel
the way I do. I just feel that at that point with the team psyche on
the line and it wasn't a conference game I thought Callahan did the
right thing.
