      I actually was one that thought Callahan played the USC game last 
year exactly right.  To me at that point in the season it would have 
served no purpose to open up the play book and potentially get our back 
ends handed to us.  I really believe that is what would have happened 
had Callahan gone in to win the game.  Callahan had a team that 
potentially could be pretty good.  At least this way the team had the 
feeling they could play with the likes of USC.  Getting blown out would 
serve no purpose.  There was no way NU could win that game anyway unless 
Pete Carroll and his entire first two units were suspended for the game 
because of some kind of misconduct.  Under those circumstances I believe 
it was a lot better to cut your losses and get out of town.  Now if that 
game were later in the season and/or a conference game I wouldn't feel 
the way I do.   I just feel that at that point with the team psyche on 
the line and it wasn't a conference game I thought Callahan did the 
right thing.
