All,
The Army in its infinite wisdom has uprooted me once again and dropped me into northern Mexico... er ... El Paso, TX. If there are any list members down here, it would be great to hook up. If not, does anyone know a watch site here?

I've lurked on this list since the early/mid 90's, and it's just amazing how it has evolved/devolved over time. Fall practice is here, yet there hasn't been any real discussion about the upcoming season, other than links to the OWH or LJS.

Being out of state for the past 20 years, I don't have any "sources" in the athletic dept or team. All I know is what I saw last year and what I read in the online rags.

Doug Horwich and others used to do a position breakdown every fall about this time. I really miss that. Guess I could read the media guide... (at least then I could spell the names right, but I'm sure someone will point that out)

I'm looking forward to seeing the Def this year (not really sure if it's with anticipation or dread). I think the D-line will be fine.? Out of the four we lost, I think? Moore is going to be who we miss the most. Carriker got the press and some highlight reel stuff, but I think Moore was the real hero of that bunch. I think the interior guys might actually be an upgrade. Suh is a flat out stud and Steinkuler has genetics on his side. Wasn't Turner the kick-blocking hero from a couple years ago? Hopefully he brings that explosion and speed to the end.

I'm kind of excited to see Octavien on the field full-time. Don't know if he is actually faster than Ruud or Mac, but he sure seemed like it in the limited amount I've actually seen him. Everyone says the LBs will be the strength of the def. I hope Cosgrove turns them loose and lets them blitz like crazy. I love to see our defense scare the crap out the other guys - haven't seen that too much in the past 8 yrs.

The DBs are the big question in everyone's mind (everyone being comprised of the online pundits anyhow). I think at least half of the blame everyone heaped on them last year should have been placed on the line for lack of pressure. Obviously that's just an opinion. I wonder how much time some of the new kids will get this year. Every coach always claims that competition is wide open for positions, but it seems to me they usually fall back on the guy with experience. Guess we'll see.

Can't wait for the season to start and I'm really hoping that I don't get stuck with UTEP games every Sat. Of course it could be worse - it could be UT all season. God help me.

Terry
