It's hard to figure out who's the MVP of this game, Tony Watson or Ryan
Wehrle as the Huskers cruise to a 7-0 dominating victory in front of about
8,500 fans.

If you made me choose, I'd take Tony, but the much maligned Wehrle at least
deserves a mention. He singled and later scored the opening run in the
first inning. In the second inning, he doubled with 2 outs but was
stranded. In the 4th, Ryan absolutely crushed a 2-0 pitch over the left
field berm for a 3-run homer to make it 5-0. In the 6th, RW singled home
Nimmo to put us up 6-0. Outside of Abeita and Gerch's solo homers, Wehrle
was involved in every run the Huskers scored. His 4-5 night was a sight for
sore eyes!

And now, the Big XII pitcher of the Week, TONY WATSON! This was quite
possibly one of the best performances I've ever seen out of Tony (and that
says a lot). To understand it, you have to realize that UT has one of the
most potent offenses in the country. They are hitting well over .300 as a
team, they have something like 80 homers on the season, and swipe bases like
they're free beer at a frat house.

Tony was flat out dominant. A complete game 2 hitter in only 96 pitches (66
strikes) with 6 strikeouts and no walks (1 HBP). Only 4 people reached base
all night and Tony only faced 30 hitters (1 was 'Daniel Bruce' gunned out at
third on a drive to Belfonte) and nobody got to third base.

6Ks may not seem amazing, but UT popped out 9 times, 6 of which on the
infield. All the other popouts were very shallow.

The Husker bats pounded out 13 hits and Abeita and Gerch's homers were hit
pretty freakin hard too. The Huskers chased a very solid pitcher in
Russell. IMHO, he's got an all world changeup and he's made a lot of teams
look bad this year. His ERA is in the mid 3's, but he also has a team high
72 strikeouts.

Not to overstate the meaning of one game because in baseball it's a very
long season, but this was a statement win for the Huskers. Beating the #5
team in the country in such dominating fashion sets us up for a great
weekend of baseball.

Make sure you tune in tomorrow and Sunday as both games are on T.V.!

Saturday FSN @ 3:00pm and Sunday @ 12:05pm on ESPNU.

GO HUSKERS!
