Appreciate the game story. The two players from OSU that
figured most prominently
in their win are from Western Oklahoma and played small
school baseball out here.
Jordy Mercer went to Taloga and was the star of a Class B
State Championship team
about three years ago. The enrollment in that high school is
not likely more than
35-40 and they probably will close the school after this
year. Rebel Ridling is one
of a long line of Ridlings to play for Sentinel, a perennial
Class A baseball
power about 45 miles east of Erick. I watched him play in
high school and have
watched the teams from Sentinel play since the summer of
1996. They went a couple
of seasons in competition that I saw before I witnessed an
error. One of their
players, Ryan Leeper, who graduated last spring is playing
minor league ball.
To make this more Husker related, it would behoove the
coaches in Lincoln to
consider the talent rich schools out in the hinterlands of
Oklahoma. Braden Looper
who pitches for Atlanta is from Mangum, a Class 2A school
and Johnny Bench came
from Binger which was about the size of Sentinel in the days
that he played. Most
of the small high schools in Western Oklahoma play baseball
in the fall and spring.
There are numerous towns with no football but their Friday
Night Lights are on the
baseball diamond from mid-August to the end of September.
Our weather down here is
one factor except this spring when wet and now cold have
slowed things down.
Best get on with writing about some up and coming diamond
stars from Sayre since
I am the sports writer for the Sayre Record-Democrat.

baseball game this spring
due to bad weather and schedule conflicts. It might happen
this week if enough
guys are eligible and it doesn't rain.)

Huskers lose today but do take the series. That is
one thing about baseball. You don't have to, nor can you,
win every game. But, you do have to take an abundance of
series wins to be successful.
