[Husker] Chris Simms

I know I was critical of Mack Brown for playing Chris
Simms over Major Applewhite when both were playing for
Tejas. I thought Applewhite played better and showed
better leadership than Simms, and wondered whether
"Chrissy" got the job because of the influence of his
father.

Fast forward to yesterday. Chris Simms ruptures his
spleen during the Tampa Bay game yesterday, misses a
few plays, then returns to play. After the game, they
rush him to the hospital where the rupture was
diagnosed and removed in emergency surgery.

Interesting story from Mack Brown that I didn't
remember:
Texas coach Mack Brown related a story about Simms
facing Nebraska in 2002, when the former Longhorns
quarterback had an ugly looking dislocated finger on
his throwing hand. Simms went to the sideline, had it
popped into place and finished with 419 yards passing,
still a Texas regular-season record.

"He wouldn't let us pull him out of the game. He said
`Please call timeout so they can pop it back in.' He
didn't want to miss a play," Brown recalled. "His
competitiveness, his toughness, has never been a
question."

I won't ever be able to question Simms toughness. I
still think Applewhite was a better QB, and I won't be
picking Simms for my fantasy team anytime in the
future, though...
