I referred to televised comments during the post-game broadcasts on
local stations by Cosgrove, Callahan, and perhaps Norvell. I didn't
say they called the game plan perfect. I said that when they were
questioned about the game plan (which is clearly questioning the
coaching), their responses focused on the players' failures to
execute the game plan. To me, this seemed to deflect attention
from the coaches to the players. That may be something they did
or did not intend and, as someone pointed out, the problems actually
may have with execution. However, it isn't the first time I have
had the impression that the coaches don't seem to openly consider
questions about the game plan, playcalling, etc., but don't mind
openly considering questions about the players execution of the
game plan, playcalling, etc. As someone else pointed out, every
play is designed to work if executed well, so does that mean it's
always players who don't get the job done? Some coaches take the
point of view that if the players didn't execute the play, it may
either have been wrong to call the play or the players hadn't been
prepared well enough.
