This is going to be the year of the Husker tight ends. This appears
to me to be Callahan's biggest adjustment during the off-season.
Herian is going to be like Shannon Sharpe was for the Broncos: to fast
for a LB to cover and too big for a DB; and cause fits for defensive
backfields. And he is many times accompanied by two and three other
TEs, in one situation it freed him up for the TD catch. Taylor can
throw to any of them and they are out there with some very good
receivers and IBs and Todd coming out of the backfield. Wow. It sure
seems like Callahan is putting a pretty good system together.
How about Taylor's completion %? Sure, not really good opponents, but
for a number of years it was a real accomplishment for a Husker QB to
break 60% against anybody.
I too have a good, though in my case also terrified feeling about USC.
When I think about how they went into the Alamo Bowl undermanned due
to injuries against a concensus higher caliber team and fought for a
win, it makes me pretty optimistic, particularly the way the Huskers
have improved personnel-wise and running the offense since the Alamo.
It is impossible to quantify this matchup in my mind. Carol is very
good with a week off, but it's early in the season and there isn't
much film of the Huskers in any kind of big game situation.
Thank goodness for Taylor. This will be the first bowl game of the
year and will be good preparation for the weak B12 north, and as
someone noted, the horns, who seemed very beatable in Lincoln if the
Huskers stay healthy and keep improving.
