Good post, Rob. One interesting point, which I left intact below, was
your mentioning of Barney Cotton as being part of Frank's first staff of
his own, and I believe implying that this was a good move (my apologies
if I put words into your mouth, Rob!). Over here in Cyclone country
Barney is probably named as much as McCarney as the reason for ISU's
woes. ISU had a TON of talent and returning starters coming back on
offense this year, and the result has been nothing short of anemic.
Particularly bad is the offensive line -- and Barney is the position
coach. I too thought Barney was a great hire by Frank, and in turn a
great hire by McCarney. With my 20/20 hindsight, I'm really starting to
wonder.

<snip>
Nebraska was too one dimensional under Coach Solich. During the Eric
Crouch era, Crouch was the offense. Then in playing Eric a ton to help
him win the Heisman, the future suffered. I would have liked to see what
Nebraska would have done once Coach Solich 'made the team his own' with
Barney Cotton and Bo Polini, etc. I have always felt that Coach Solich
finally had stepped out from under Coach Osborne's shadow.
