[Husker] High School Kickers

I haven't checked the rules lately, but remember when most of these high
school kickers were making 50 yard field goals they were kicking from a two
inch tee at goal posts that were almost five feet wider than college kickers
have to work with. College kickers kick from the ground. Five feet gives a
lot of forgiveness to an errant kick. And of course golfers know the benefit
of teeing up the ball over a fairway shot. (Sorry, that is an analogy so it
must not be true). ; )

Also remember college kick-offs this year are from a tee that is one inch
high rather than two. The intention of the rule change was to create fewer
touch-backs and more returns. So a lot of coaches are stressing hang-time
over distance.

Congdon is a very good kicker. Hopefully as he matures he will develop
better leg strength. (Remember Josh Brown didn't really come into his own
until his senior year.) We have some kickers who were excellent kickers in
high school on this team. Alegria has been mentioned. Henery was one of the
top soccer players in the country and could be an outstanding kicker and
punter. All of them simply need to adjust to the different challenges that
are associated with kicking in the college game.
