For me, it's not a time thing. It's when all the questions are answered and
everyone knows that he is "our guy". When people stop wondering "Will he
succeed here or not?" or "Will he stay or not?" or "Is he looking to move
on or not?" An excellent example is Charlie Weiss at Notre Dame. This is
only his second year and he IS Notre Dame football now. Willingham wasn't
and he was there longer. Bob Davie wasn't and he was there longer. It's
because Notre Dame and their nation *knows* that he is their guy. They want
him and he wants them. It doesn't matter than they got drubbed at Michigan,
no one started talking about dissatisfaction with the coach. He could go
8-4 for the next 3-4 years and it wouldn't matter, because he is their guy.
Eventually, mediocre seasons would cause talk, but it would take a while.
Frank didn't have it. Bill is not there yet, and I don't think it is the
number of years that will make him "our guy". More success will help. But
if we had blown that lead, at home, to Kansas; the Alamo Bowl honeymoon
would have been dead and buried. If he is that tenuous, I think it will be
a while before he becomes synonymous with Nebraska football.
