It's pretty common for a WCO or pro set offense to run on first down with
hopes of getting 5 or more yards and set up a play-action on second down.
Perhaps this is another artifact of Callahan's tenure in the NFL. According
to Damon Benning on Big Red Wrap Up, when the run started to get shut down,
the play-action was not effective and the LBs moved up.
Here's my take: they HAD TO RUN THE BALL TO BEAT USC because of the pass
rush.
Was TO trying to lose in Tempe in 96? How about at KSU when Turman started
in place of TF? Was Frank trying to lose at Boulder and in the Rose Bowl? A
game plan is a game plan, and the coaches know a helluva lot more than
anyone on this list that is not in the football program. This discussion is
pretty mute, however, and not productive. It doesn't matter what they
looked like. What matters is that they beat KSU.

The lack of passing on first down -- predictable the whole way through.
He should have shown more confidence in his experienced QB and let him
carry the day. We probably still would have lost because of the
execution problems, but we would have looked like we were trying to win.

I hated the fumble and the other lapses in execution.
Our only chance of matching USC was to execute well.
Lots of people said that before the game, and I agreed.
Did we execute well? No.
So, we lost. Where's the controversy?
I can't understand why all these "fans" keep putting
the boot into BC's gameplan. The gameplan was fine.
We didn't execute. We lost. Move on.

Steven
