If the purpose of coaching is to get the most wins from the
current pool of players, then (yes) you probably have a point.
However, BC's purpose was different. He was coaching to
transition the team to a superior offense. Not for 2004.
Not for 2005. But for 2006 and beyond. That meant teaching
a whole bunch of new stuff to the current players, players who
had been recruited for an entirely different offense.

On the contrary, it is the players who are improving and learning.
After two years of experience, the players are comfortable with
the new offense and are now able to execute better. Plus the
new offense has attracted a new class of recruit.

In my opinion our biggest shortcoming was the offensive line
(but they are relatively young and will improve significantly).
However, even with that line, we were not that far from taking
USC to the wire. The Taylor-Lucky fumble was key. The Black-
shirts started the half by holding USC to 3 and out. The Huskers
got good field position and the momentum was starting to shift
our way. But the fumble killed that and gave USC an easy score.
21-3. Game over.

Don't you know, if we beat a team it can't be good.
After we beat Colorado, we were told they were on a slide.
After we beat Michigan, we were told they didn't want to play.
After we beat Troy, we were told they were burned out.
After we beat Iowa State, we were told they won't make a bowl.
Keep in mind that before the season started, many commentators
expected Iowa State to be our biggest competition in the North.
And just last week several commentators predicted an Iowa State
win.
I am happy to be 5-1. I will also be happy to be 6-2 (with
a loss to Texas). Here's how I see the first 4 years of BC:
---------------------------------------------
2004: messy transition
2005: play in a bowl
2006: beat the teams we are supposed to beat
2007: beat the big boys (starting with USC)
---------------------------------------------
Cheers,
Steven
