I think folks are using the pattern we've observed ever since Solich was
replaced by Bill Callahan, and extrapolating that something like 2004 will
happen again if Callahan is fired.
Let's take your two points of comparison, 3 years apart: 2003 (NU was 5-0 at
this point in the season) and 2006 (5-1). If Nebraska fires Callahan in
2007 or 2008, there will be another 1-2 years of transition to a new head
coach, new assistants, and new offensive and defensive schemes. The new guy
will want his own type of players, and as we all know, that doesn't happen
immediately because of the need to scout and recruit who's available (even
if you rely heavily on JUCO players, as Callahan has done).
Where does that leave us in 2009, another 3 years from now? We have one
quality opponent already scheduled (@Virginia Tech on 9/19/2009); assume
that's an automatic loss with an unproven coaching staff. If we have a
sub-.500 conference record, like NU had in 2004, we're now 4-2 at best,
headed into the meat of the Big XII schedule, where we may not win another
game. And now your new coach who succeeded Callahan is on the hot seat.
How is this an improvement?
