There is an inherent contradiction in your post. On the one
hand, you're saying that he is setting the bar too high by
saying that "we have to beat Texas or USC to be worth anything"
and on the other hand, you're saying that "college football has
fallen into parity". If there is parity, then it isn't really
such a stretch to beat the top teams. If beating the top teams
is so hard, then there isn't really parity.

I think the truth of the matter is that NU under Callahan hasn't
beaten many ranked teams and no highly ranked teams. The goal
that Peterson set in firing Solich is very high, some would
argue unrealistically high, but, like it or not, he and many
NU fans have made it clear that they don't think 10-3 seasons
are acceptable. The expectation for teams at the top is to
win all games or at least lose no more than one game per year.
NU doesn't appear to be at that level in losing to USC or
going to OT against KU, but NU hasn't played itself out of
contention either. It does "remain to be seen", but if the
same standard is applied to Callhan as was applied to Solich
then I agree that he is unlikely to succeed. That said, I
think that it is more likely that the bar will be lowered.
After all, I don't think the reason Solich was fired was that
Pederson set the bar so high; I think the reason he fired
Solich was that Pederson has a massive ego, thought he knew
how to coach better than Solich, and couldn't tolerate Solich
not following his micromanagement.
