Yes to both, but the Big XII title game in particular. I think his major
beef with the conference itself was the fact that the Texas schools would
dominate the rule-making, and of course they did, especially with respect to
partial qualifiers (the Big 8 used to allow unlimited partial qualifiers, if
I recall correctly, but Texas forced through a change that would only allow
one PQ per team per year). Luckily, that was as far as it went ... it's not
like they located the conference HQ in Dallas or held the majority of the
championship football games in Texas or anything ... oh, wait ... 8^)
TO's big objection about the title game is that it would potentially
disqualify a national-title contender who had already beaten most of their
conference opponents in the regular season. Of course, he was also
prescient in that regard, as NU (#3 in 1996), K-State (#2 in 1998), Texas
(#3 in 2001), and Oklahoma (#1 in 2003) have all been upset in the
championship game. But, hey, all the schools got that filthy Dr Pepper
money, so it's all good ...
