by beating Baylor 3-2 despite being out hit 8 to 5. Shirek pitched well giving
up 2 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings and the NU offense eked out the victory with the
help of a timely 2 out rally in the bottom of the 8th to get the winning run.
An inning earlier Christy homered to tie the game after Baylor homered in the
top of the inning to take the lead.
Herr, Bird and Jensen closed out the game after Baylor went up 2-1 in the top of
the 7th. I'm guessing - I didn't have audio here at work - that was in part to
get Herr & Bird in early to get them the tourney experience along with Shirek
having a pitch count near 100.
Jensen made things interesting in the 9th with a leadoff double, but a popped up
bunt by the next batter, another pop up to the ss kept the runner from
advancing. The inning ended with an intentional walk and ground out.
I'm with Skylar in not liking the tiebreak method. The hard part is fitting an
eight team tournament into a weekend. How important do you make the
tournament? It seems that the Big 12 is trying to increase the likely hood
that the #1 and #2 seeds meet inspite of the results on the field. It can also
diminish the incentive of top seeds on Saturday if they have already clinched a
championship game birth. Come tournament time, every game is supposed to be
critical to becoming a champion.
Now it's TT tomorrow night.
Go Big Red,
- Jay
