The news last night did not show a replay of the "foul" ball which I
thought was curious. Does Nebraska have video cameras at away games? Do
the TV stations get video feeds from the local stations for the news?
That play got me to wondering what would happen if the ball was
fair and the bullpen and bench cleared still jumped up and complained
that the ball was foul and the officials called the play depending on
the bench and not a official with the better view. Would a team
practice that kind of gamesmanship?
I don't worry a whole lot any longer about whether Nebraska unduly
gains on bad calls by officials; especially since the Penn State
football game back in 1982 (long memory) when the officials made two
horrendous calls that cost Nebraska the game and a possible national
championship. Also one year that Nebraska was getting pounded by Texas
but was still in the game. The calls and game seem to have been leaning
Texas' way all day when finally we caught a pass for a large gain.. An
official called defensive pass interference against Texas.
Unfortunately, Matt Davidson caught the ball and was further down the
field than the penalty called for and we lost ground. If the ball had
been foul and it was called a home run, well so be it. If the ball was
fair and the OSU team influenced the call to be foul, then so be it, but
increases my cynical outlook on officiating.
