>IMHO, a good read on the subject of baseball talent and scouting,
though a few years old, is the book 'Dollar
>Sign on the Muscle'.

This is one of the best baseball books ever written, and I have a
library full of baseball books. It is written by a guy name Kevin
Kerrane but even the last run, which was published in the late 90s, is
long out of print. You can pick it up used at Amazon.com or a variety of
other used book places last time I checked.

If you want an opposite view on scouting, player development and
baseball in general you should definitely check out the very popular
"Moneyball" by Michael Lewis. It covers the exploits of Billy Beane, the
GM of the Oakland A's and his "revolutionary" and extremely overhyped
theories on baseball.

I am also a big fan of "The Game According to Syd" by former Pirates GM
Syd Thrift, which outlines his ideas (some good, some bad and some plain
ugly) for the game of baseball. It is also long out of print but
available used.

Lastly I really, really like "The Physics of Baseball" by Robert K.
Adair, PhD. Reading it requires some patience for the Average Joe as it
is pretty technical (as a book about science should be), but it will
definitely give you a greater appreciation for just how hard a game
baseball is to play. It is in it's 3rd or 4th edition and should be
available new.

>I think those days are why I've always thought 'Bull Durham' is such a
great baseball movie

"Bull Durham" is hands down the best baseball movie of all time. I would
rank my Top 10 is:

1. Bull Durham
2. Bang The Drum Slowly
3. The Natural
4. 61*
5. Major League
6. Field of Dreams
7. Eight Men Out
8. Pride of the Yankees
9. Soul of the Game
10. Pastime

Yeah, I am a bit of a baseball fan.

Go Big Red!
