To say I'm impressed would be gross understatement. Thanks for a VERY
enlightening note.
IMHO, a good read on the subject of baseball talent and scouting, though a
few years old, is the book 'Dollar Sign on the Muscle'.
When I was growing up in NW Illinois in the early 60's, we used to go to
watch games in the old single-A Midwest League in Dubuque. I saw Tommy
John pitch for Clinton a good decade before his eponymous surgery. (I
believe the initial injury that eventually led to that surgery may have
occurred in a game for Clinton, too. I met him when he was in a Dubuque
hospital, in the room next to my grandmother, who had just had cataract
surgery.)
In those days, the lower minor league rosters had a mixture of players on
their way up the system and those on their way back down. Not many former
major leaguers stuck with it all the way back to single-A, but a few did.
I think those days are why I've always thought 'Bull Durham' is such a
great baseball movie, I got to know a few players back then chatting with
them from the stands, that movie portrayed the type of baseball and
baseball players I grew up watching.
