This is why many (myself included) regard win/loss records as a
completely useless statistic for individual pitchers. They're a team
statistic, and nothing more. An even better example of this can be
found in the 1987 season, when Nolan Ryan went 8-16 with a 2.76 ERA in
211.7 innings pitched. His record wasn't indicative of bad pitching,
but of the fact that he got virtually no run support.
"Saves" and "Holds" are almost as stupid, but it's a losing battle to
convince sportswriters otherwise. Bottom line: it sounds like Shane
pitched great for his first outing. Best of luck to him in future starts.
