This CAN’T be filed under the heading, “Shocking News.”
This nightmare of a season for Coach Collier MAY have just taken a turn for
the better. Maybe. This sure as heck can’t hurt the overall disposition of
the team. I hope they’ve bottomed out and will rebound and show a little
something the rest of the way (there ARE still 11 league games left and a league
tourney).
I’m not there at practice and in the locker room, but from what I’ve heard
and seen, and from what has been written, Joe was out-of-control, selfish,
immature and just not a very good player this year. To say that he had become
a distraction is an understatement. I won’t be surprised if NU starts
playing more inspired basketball beginning tomorrow (3 p.m. tip-off at the Devaney
Center against Missouri).
I’m trying to avoid the 15-yard piling-on penalty here, but anybody who’s
been at the games this year has probably noticed Joe’s antics during timeouts
(laughing, paying no attention to what’s being discussed, etc.) when he’s not
one of the five currently playing. Did anyone see him laughing while
sitting during the latter stages of the Colorado blowout loss in Boulder Wednesday
night?
I hope he gets his head, priorities and life straightened out; but he had
become an incredibly destructive element in the hoops program. It was getting
tough to watch him embarrass himself on the court. I hope Joe someday “gets
it,” because he sure as heck doesn’t right now.
