As the Huskers sit idle this weekend with their 2 and 0 conference mark (12
and 3 overall), Big XII hoops action continues.

Holy snikees, Kansas State, fresh off of their embarrassment at the hands of
Nebraska last Tuesday at home, goes to Kansas and beats the Jayhawks in the
Phog!!! The final was 59-55 and it had to be the biggest win in Jim
Woolridge's career at K-State. The heat is probably still on, but at least he'll
step back from the ledge ... he was one really down and despondent dude after
the loss to NU in Manhattan.

Non-conference play saw conference leader Texas take out #3-rated Villanova,
58-55. That's a big one for a saggin' conference rep. Oklahoma avoided
going 0 and 3 in league play and deprived A&M their first 2 and 1 Big XII
conference start ever with a 45-44 (look at some of these low scores) win over the
Aggies in College Station. Terrell Everett scored OU's last eight points,
including a three-pointer with 6.1 seconds left. Everett was the guy who
missed the short shot late against the Huskers (Joe McCray's trey to beat OU has
to be the biggest shot of the young conference season so far ... put the
Huskers on a cloud and the Sooners a hole).

Texas Tech beat Iowa State in Lubbock 76-73 (scoring explosion!). I think
this makes beating the Cyclones an even tougher task Tuesday night. Oh well,
get up for it ... it actually means something, boys!

Oklahoma State is up on Baylor in Waco at the half (16 pt. lead with 4
minutes left whitled to 33-22). Baylor, as a condition of their NCAA-penalty (at
least I don't think it was self-imposed), wasn't allowed to play ANY
pre-conference games this year -- what a killer!!

Colorado tips-off in about an hour at Missouri. Buffs started 10 and 1 but
have lost their first two conference games. Missouri -- like the Huskers --
suddenly appear very much alive after much disappointment early.

Marquette, a victim in Lincoln this year and a victor over #2 UConn a short
while back, got pounded today by West Virginia, 104-85.

Current or close-to-current conference standings (not including OSU's
contest and whatever happens in Columbia):
Texas, 2-0, 14-2
Nebraska, 2-0, 12-3
Missouri, 2-0, 9-4
Texas Tech, 2-1, 10-7
Oklahoma State, 1-1, 11-5
Kansas, 1-1, 10-5
Texas A&M, 1-2, 11-3
K-State, 1-2, 10-4
Oklahoma, 1-2, 10-4
Iowa State, 1-2, 11-5
Baylor, 0-1, 0-1
Colorado, 0-2, 10-3

I think Iowa State, semi-desperate sitting at 1-2 in the conference, is
going to be tough to beat this next Tuesday. Biggest game in Collier's tenure at
Nebraska. Just my opinion, but all things considered, I really think so.
What an opportunity he and his team have sitting right in front of them.
Texas has to be considered the "best team in the conference" right now, but who's
number two?

Candidly, all of the aforementioned probably means little to me if NU was
sitting at 0 and 2 and 10 and 5 overall. Not a fair-weather fan, just a much
different level of interest.
