I'm not sure I agree with that assessment. One of the reasons that the
Raiders have trouble with their head coaches is that the players quickly
learn that the coach doesn't call ANY of the important shots. It's
hard enough coaching players who are earning much more than their
coach, having Al Davis watching every move (and overturning several of them)
can't help. I know there are people who consider Al Davis a hero, I'm
not one of them, and I enjoy watching the Raiders lose almost as much
as I enjoy watching the Packers lose (especially to the Bears.)
FWIW, there are now 5 NFL vacancies, the Packers and the Rams canned their
coaches today and Dick Vermiel has retired in Kansas City. I don't see
Callahan as a good fit for the Packers (and the expectations by the fans
in Green Bay may exceed those in Lincoln), and I suspect the Rams already
have their options figured out, since they've effectively been without
a head coach for months. I'm not sure what the plans are in KC, but Vermeil's
retirement was not unexpected.
