[Husker] A&M Game

Before the McCray implosion, I had some high expectations also.
Unfortunately, it didn't turn out well. That's a darned shame, for Joe
McCray as much as anyone else.

For *this* team, making the NCAA would be fantastic, and it's not out of
their reach yet - although very improbable. No one wants to mention the
NIT, but for them to make it this year I think would be a very good
accomplishment. Apparently it's better than others expected for them at
the start of the year.

Here's the realities of Nebraska basketball:

- No one cares about the sport until about January. Then, because of
baseball, they don't care much after February. Perhaps that's a different
fan base, and it'd change if they were better, but that's the most of it.

- If we had to give up names as to who would be a next good coach, this
list could come up with at least 50 names for a new football coach. The
only names we're capable of coming up with for basketball are guys who are
already established coaches. I take that as an indication of how little
basketball matters to the state of Nebraska, 'cause if you walked around
Nebraska asking the same question, you'd get basically the same response.

- We're not going to pay a basketball coach enough to get a "big name" guy
in here. As far as I know, there are no big name, big $$$ sponsors who are
going to give the basketball program money to buy a coach. This means
we're going to have to find those diamonds in the rough and see what
happens.

My feelings on Collier:

Collier spent his first couple years recovering from Nee augering the
program into the ground. I liked Nee, and I think he did as much for
Nebraska basketball as anybody, but he really lost it in the end. Collier
has spent the next few years figuring out what's going on, and finally
getting a good staff together and start recruiting Big 12 caliber players.
My worry is that the next "diamond in the rough" goes through the same
sequence.

I agree with your assessment - we should be finishing in the upper half of
the conference, should be going to post-season, and should manage to win a
NCAA game within the next few years.

But considering *this* year, *this* team, I do not consider them a
complete disappointment. Some games, absolutely. But the season? Well....
I guess it's not over yet, is it??????
