Good start for the Huskers. Pitching looks great so far and the
offense has scored 15 runs in 2 games. NC State is a MUCH better
team the Charleston Southern so this was a good win!
Thanks for the summary, Skylar.
Hard to believe that Dave Van Horn and Rob Childress are long gone (seems
like the days of Buck Beltzer weren't THAT long ago). It's Anderson's show
completely now, and it sounds like the kind of start -- at least in the first
couple of games -- we'd hoped for.
As good and relatively dependable as left-handers Kroeneke (sp?) and
Duensing were -- to me, on paper at least -- the Chamberlain-Dorn-Watson weekend
rotation looks to be as good as anything we've put together ... and we've had
some solid rotations. I really think lefty Tony Watson is going to shine this
year. Jensen will round into form sometime soon, you'd think. It's early.
As fickle as pitching can be, I'll take our chances with these guys. Just
gotta' keep the injury-bug far, far away.
And I'm including catcher Jeff Christy in this mix (being the Cardinal fan
that I am, Christy reminds me of former Card/current Giant gold-glover Mike
Matheny -- at least as far as his leadership, defensive strong points and
overall value to the team is concerned). A great defensive catcher is priceless
... and I read that Christy is going to call pitches this year. Wow, they
don't just let ANYBODY do that.
What a luxury ... to be able to break-in some of these first-year position
players playing behind pitching (and catching) like this. Sounds like Wehrle
and Nimmo are off to good starts, and it also sounds like a couple of the new
guys have contributed as well.
Skylar, if you have this info, how did Anderson pencil in the line-up for
the first two games? Did Nimmo lead-off and Opitz hit ninth? Where did
Christy and Wehrle hit? Just curious. Thanks again for the summary.
