Today the Huskers survive a late scare to beat NC State 4-3. It was
the bottom of the ninth with one out, Huskers up 4-0 when reliever
Brett Jensen walked Aaron Cone. The very next batter Jeremy Synan
took the first pitch over the left field wall.
Jensen then got the next batter to ground out to 3rd, but then on
the very next pitch, Matt Mangini homered to left. Fortunately,
Jensen was able to get Jon Still to ground out to third for the
final out of the inning.
What a close one for the skers. Joba started the game, went 7.1
innings, struck out 7, no runs, 2 hits for a great first start of
the year. He was pulled after striking out the first batter in the
7th (probably because he just hit 100 pitches and it's early in the
season) in favor of Junior reliever Jared Cranston (Seward County CC
transfer) came in a struck out 2 to end the inning.
As for the offense, the scoring was pretty spread out, no homers
today. In the third, Opitz singled with 1 out to start the inning
and was brought home on a full-count triple by Bryce Nimmo. The
next batter, Ryan Wherle double down the left field line to make it
2-0.
That score held until the 6th inning when Gerch was HBP and Brandon
Buckman was walked on 4 straight pitches. Then Anderson calls for
the sac bunt, but all runners were safe on an error by the first
baseman. With the bases loaded, Nick Jarros doubled in two runs to
left field making it 4-0. Still with nobody out, however, Christy
struck out, Opitz lined out, and Edlefsen grounded out to the
pitcher to end the inning.
Huskers will face The Citadel tomorrow at 1:30pm and then against
Richmond early Sunday at 10:00 am. Both games will be broadcast on
HuskersNSide (hopefully, todays game wasn't due to technical
difficulties). No radio is yet scheduled, which again seems very
odd.
Good start for the Huskers. Pitching looks great so far and the
offense has scored 15 runs in 2 games. NC State is a MUCH better
team the Charleston Southern so this was a good win!
