Please don't take my comments out of context. You make it sound like I was
arguing for Solich over Callahan, which is not the case. I answered
someone's question in the most neutral way I could, offering cases for both
sides, actually spending quite a bit more space on the case for Callahan. As
to your contention that Solich never had a top twenty class, that's a common
misconception repeated over and over on some of the recruiting boards. You
say he "never" had a top twenty class. What is your source? I suspect you've
heard/read it repeated enough that you just believe it is well founded.
According to Huskers Illustrated, Solich's first, second and third classes
were all top twenty. One year his rankings ranged from 16 to 40. I suspect
anti-Solich folks site the 40 and ignore the 16. Was Callahan 20 this year,
or 29? Lets be fair to both coaches.
And what I think is the biggest distortion by omission, the day after Solich
was fired, his class was rated 14 by rivals, and his new staff was in on a
bunch of remaining blue chip recruits. No telling what Solich might have
done with a couple more months with his new staff in place (that would have
made it one full year of recruiting with his new staff). Or better yet, a
couple more years. But like I said in the part you cut from my earlier post,
that's history, time to move on, and a case can made that Callahan looks
very promising. We'll need at least another year, though, maybe more, to
know how good he is recruiting, and on the field.
