Great analysis by Steve Reichenbach and Dave Norris. I would like to add that
with regard to Collier, he is showing that he has attracted some talent to the
program and has them playing hard, particularly Maric, who is a hemisphere away
from his home--good move to let him go home for the holidays. He lost one of
the biggest recruits in a long time when Joe McCray imploded, yet his team is
apparently bouncing back, albeit by beating two teams already entrenched in
losing skids. To show that he is moving up, the team should finish above BU,
MU, OSU, ISU (have to beat them in Ames), TAMU, and KSU (maybe even OU), and
challenge KU and UT on the court, if not finish near them. They should
challenge CU on the court and perrenially be ahead in the standings. A lot of
this, IMO relies on the health and development of Maric because they have no
other big guy (as we saw against OSU when he got in foul trouble).
He's got two native Nebraskans in the starting lineup--a common criticism of the
program is that we don't have any--and needs to continue this, as they're both
seniors.
Most of the middle of the road teams this year have one standout that is
carrying most of the load, and the top teams have several very good players.
The Huskers could build the kind of team effort that could put them in the top
6.
I have been frustrated by Collier for some time, mostly because I sould like to
know more about how he's running the show and how he's building the program;
Kurt McKeiver at the LJS summed it up with a comment this last weekend, saying
that Collier was "aloof as always." I would be able to understand the program
better if he had come out after the Creighton fiasco and said, "Man, we stunk
up the place. They're going to be running lines for the next three weeks and
doing station drills on passing and dribbling." Or, "My game plan was
completely wrong for the personnel we faced." Or something like that.
