Per Alan S.'s request for the dispellation of truthiness (or the repost
of the 1971 stats):
Offensively for 1971
Total Yds per game: 437.7 (8th in country)
Rush yds: 258.3
Pass yds: 179.3 (led conference!!!)
PPG: 39.1 (3rd in country)
Punt return avg: 15.6 (4th in country)
Fumbles lost: 15
INT: 6
Turnover margin: +26 (WOW!!)
Speaking of the option, did Tagge fumble on an option play or on a
bootleg play in the 3rd Q of the GOTC to help give the momentum back to
OU?
The fact of the matter is that Lou Holtz was flat out wrong in stating
NU was an 'option offense' in 1971. The option's visibility increased in
the post-Ferragamo years of Tom Sorley, Tim Hager and Jeff Quinn.(late
70's).
