Re: Balance offense of 1971 (and why our list is more accurate than
those entertainers on ESPN).
I have my 1995 press guide at the office - so I'll have to look for 1995
stats.
But offensively for 1971
Total Yds per game: 437.7 (8th in country)
Rush yds: 258.3
Pass yds: 179.3 (led conference!!!)
PPG: 39.1 (3rd in country)
Punt retrun avg: 15.6 (4th in country)
Fumbles lost: 15
INT: 6
Turnover margin: +26 (WOW!!)
Offensively in 1994 (just for comparison)
Total: 477.8 (5th in country)
Rush: 340.0 (1st)
Pass: 137.8
PPG: 36.3 (6th)
Turnover margin +1
The 1971 defense was stellar:
202.9 yrds per game (5th in country), 85.9 rush (2nd), 117 pass
PPG - 8.2 (3rd)
The 1994 defense:
258.8 (4th), 79.3 (4th), 179.6 (10th)
PPG - 12.1 (2nd)
In 1971 Tagge was 143-239-4, 2019 with 17TD
In 1994, Berringer was 94-151-5, 1295.
Observationally, it appears that on a whole, the 1971 passed
considerably more than most teams (the Wishbone era) while the 1994 team
(duh!) ran substantially more (the Ozbone era).
All I can find about 1995 on-line was:
Under Frazier's direction, Nebraska's offense was even more productive
than that of the "Scoring Explosion'' team in 1983. The Cornhuskers
ranked No. 1 in the nation in both rushing (399.8) and scoring (52.4)
and No. 2 in total offense (556.3). The 1983 team was slightly better
rushing the ball, averaging a school-record 401.7 yards, but it averaged
slightly fewer points (52.0) and total yards (546.7).
That would be 399.8 rush, 156.5 pass for 1995.
Just info to help Alan's statement.
