I think there is obvious difficulty in comparing teams if they are a decade
(more or less) apart since nutrition, conditioning programs, etc seem to
make advances each decade and extend to the lower ranks of football where
the college teams eventually get their athletes. I would be curious to
compare the forty times and lineman weights of the 1971 Huskers to later
great teams. I suspect if you compared this data to the 2005 Texas team you
would not bet rent money on NU if there was some way to put those teams
against each other. That said, I am not sure this captures the comparative
greatness of those two teams. Maybe greatness should be measured not only by
how well a team did in its time but how long we project that team would
remain a serious contender as football continues to evolve toward faster,
heavier, stronger athletes. Using that perspective I suspect the 95 Huskers
would be contenders still, though I would be curious to compare forty times,
weights, strength with 2005 Texas. I think Vince Young was probably more
skilled than Frasier but they both had those winner intangibles that are
hard to compare. I might bet rent money (if I was a bettor, which I am not)
on 1995 NU against 2005 Texas. That does not necessarily make 2005 Texas is
as great as 1995 NU. Compare Texas to the team that is national champion in
another 10 years. And BTW, NU fans have to be the greatest to stuff the
ballot box the way they did and put Herbstreit into apoplexy
