I think Harrison DOES believe he has what it takes. The disconnect is
that he didn't know or understand why the coaches weren't feeling the
same way. So he does what most people that age do: complain to your
support group (parents / family). Me, I complain to my wife or my
brother, but Harrison went to his folks. I would image this has
something that has built up over the months, not just a couple of
days.

So, Mom knows he's unhappy and what he thinks about things. Then he
goes AWOL (his only real "big mistake" at this point). Geez, if you
need to time to step back and think, AT LEAST GET THE COACHES'
PERMISSION. Anyway, he skips town, it's big news, Mom does not censor
herself to the LJS, the LJS does not censor itself and turns the peice
into a gossip column (contrast how the OWH reported the same story),
and now everybody knows what Harrison has told his Mom lately.

Therefore, Harrison thinks Taylor is just "OK", that he'd he playing
if he was in the SEC, etc. Now he probably was not wanting his Mom or
anyone else to reveal these feelings, but once they were out in the
open, Harrison's attitutde was known to all, and there's no way to
unring that bell.

It's too bad that he felt that way and handled it that way, but he
did, and I don't see how he could have salvaged the situation. I think
he's right that he had to leave. I hope he succeeds wherever he lands.
