What a great win today for Nebraska baseball -- 7-5 over Texas in Game Two
of the three-game series in Austin. The teams go back to being even in the
loss column in the standings, setting up a huge series-deciding game tomorrow
with Johnny Dorn on the mound for the Huskers.
After winning Friday night by a score of 6-2, Texas appeared in total
control again today, having roughed up Nebraska starter Tony Watson early and
often. The ’Horns led 4-0 as NU went to the plate in the top of the fifth. The
Huskers scored six in the inning, keyed by a big bases-loaded RBI single by
shortstop Ryan Wehrle -- a single that was turned into a bases-clearing blunder
by the Texas centerfielder as the ball got passed him, all the way to the
centerfield wall, scoring all the runners. Luke Gorsett added a big insurance
RBI, and Wehrle made a HUGE defensive play a bit later (diving in the hole to
his right, recovering to get the force at second for the second out) that
squelched a potential Texas answer to the Huskers big inning. The Cornhuskers
turned this game and the series completely around.
Watson threw strikes, but that’s what Texas expected and they started teeing
off early in the count off the undefeated Husker lefty. A great long-relief
appearance by freshman Charlie Shirek has to be the biggest individual
highlight from today’s game. This was the same kid who got smacked around in a
rare Husker loss (at home) to underdog (lowly?) Northern Colorado on March 28.
Well, Charlie didn’t have the hard breaking ball nor near the command that
cold late March night in Lincoln that he did today. He was outstanding and he
kept NU in it until the bats and (finally!) some breaks could come around.
31-6 on the year for the Big Red. Oh, for a big win tomorrow against these
guys.
