The Huskers look like overacheivers at 8-2 in the B12 the way their relievers
are pitching. I am amazed how many walks and especially hit batters by the
middle and late relief. Throwing strikes is one thing, but hitting four batters
a game? That seems like something that could be avoided. They lost some good
arms last year that are being replaced by freshmen, but this is quite alarming,
and the offense cannot continue to overcome high late inning ERAs, particularly
in the post-season.
They desperately need the big four (Chamberlain, Shirek, Dorn and Watson)
starting pitchers to step up and get into the 7th or 8th inning (although last
night Chamberlain got into the 7th with a 5-run lead and it was almost not
enough against a less-than powerhouse aTm). Watson will get a chance to do
just that tonight. He needs to get deep into the game jsut to give the
relievers some rest after the last two games. The Huskers also need to keep
Chamberlain healthy.
I just hope that the Dave Bingham can get the young pitchers to improve before
they get in a real funk from which they can't recover. Jensen may be able to
provide leadership there.
It is important that they come out of the aTm series with momentum to face
Texas.
