Hello Husker Fans,
#6 NU (21-5, 4-2) played a tough #21 Creighton (18-7) team on
Tuesday night and won on some great hitting by Brandon Buckman. In
the top of the 9th, Buckman broke a 4-4 tie with a towering shot to
right field off preseason All-American Scott Reese, his 2nd homer of
the day and 8th on the year. That snapped Reese's 15-inning
scoreless streak.
NU added an insurance run after that, when Christy doubled in Luke
Gorsett. It was all Brett Jensen needed who set the Bluejays down in
order in the bottom of the inning for his 4th win.
NU got out to a lead early, a 2-run single by Jake Mort plated Luke
Gorsett and Buckman in the 2nd inning. They added 2 more runs in
the third when Wehrle tripled off of the top of the fence in left
and Buckman then hit his first of two homers that barely stayed in
the park in right.
Jensen (4-0) came in with a 4-4 tie and runners on the corner with 2
outs in the 7th and struck out Ogden to end a CU rally. He pitched
2.1 innings, gave up 1 hit (a dying quail over Mort's head) and
struck out 2. He is really coming into his own. Shirek started the
game and pitched very well into the 5th where he ran into trouble
and was pulled in favor of Cranston.
There were 5 hit batters in this game. Gorsett reached everytime he
got up and raised his average to .398 with a 3 for 3 day, 1 HBP and
1 BB. The only Husker without a hit was Jaros, who was 0 for 5.
Andy Gerch had a couple hits, who had struggled this year so far.
Good win against a very quality team and not to mention in-state
rival in front of 12,276. A little smaller crowd for this game, but
it's still early in the season I think. It could have also been the
ticket prices, but who knows.
The Huskers take on Missouri in Columbus this weekend for what is
probably their biggest series so far. Missouri was picked by some to
win the Big XII (although I personally doubt it). The games are
Friday at 6:30pm, Saturday 2:00pm, and Sunday 1:00pm.
