According to the Baseball Encyclopedia, Dazzy Vance was born in Orient,
Iowa, in 1891. The family moved to Webster County, Nebraska, in 1898.
The Orient Iowa website says that according to his family bible, his
birthname was really Charles Arthur Vance. He reversed that to Arthur
Charles Vance as a young man and was using Arthur C. Vance when he finally
made it to the majors (after a brief stay a few years earlier) at the
age of 31. Despite his late start, he still had over 2000 strikeouts in
his major league career.
A reporter from St. Louis asked him what the 'C' stood for and he answered
'Clarence', and was stuck with that for the rest of his life.
My (old) copy of the Baseball Encyclopedia lists him as Clarence Arthur
(Dazzy) Vance.
The Baseball Hall of Fame has him as Arthur Charles (Dazzy) Vance.
