Have you ever officiated in any sport?  It's tough to come up with the
correct call and proper rule every time, especially instantaneously.  

I would have to review the rulebook on the NCAA site (and I don't have 
enough asprin on hand to do that today), but I think there might be 
different 'intentional grounding' rules in effect on place kick attempts.  

I though I heard Bill Callahan say something on his TV show that implied
he thought 'ineligible receiver downfield' should have been called, 
not intentional grounding.  I'm not sure if that was the right call, either.

It's kind of funny, but the TV announcers always get these calls right,
in advance.  When a team waits until 4th down to kick the field goal,
the criticize the coach for not kicking on 3rd down, in case something
goes wrong with the snap.  When a team kicks before 4th down and something 
goes wrong with the snap, then they can criticize the officials.
