I disagree.

Washington had the opportunity to play BYU in a Bowl (very low paying
Holiday Bowl that the WAC was tied to at the time).  UW went instead
to the Orange Bowl where they beat OU.

Had UW played and beated BYU,  the would have had a  valid claim to the
MNC,  instead they went for the money.  BYU played and defeated a 6-5 
Michigan team instead.
