Maybe Brent gave the cop that "Now hold on there, pardner!" line and it
didn't sit well.  Or maybe he asked if he was the freshman cop, or the
veteran cop.

Seriously, if it's a law, enforce it.  What's the point?  How about not
letting a passenger hold a beer for the driver in case the driver is
drinking and gets stopped?

If others in the car had beer and didn't get ticketed (and that was only
from an unnamed witness), Brent probably did something wise-ass; or
maybe the cop really didn't like him.  In any case, Brent should be
smart enough to keep his beer can hidden when driving past a traffic
cop.
