[Husker] Remember the Alamo? (fwd)

Hello Mike and others,
The word here at Ohio is excitement and patience. Generally speaking,
everyone is excited as heck about the new coaching staff. Word from the
players is that the program is being run with a 100% more
professionalism when compared with the previous staff. So, in the
medium term, expectations are for a solid turnaround. But, everyone
knows that the turnaround will be tough. The number of Frosh on the
two-deep roster is pretty amazing. Apparently the previous staff did
not leave the new staff with much talent (I fully understand the irony
in that claim).

In terms of our non-conference schedule, we have a brutal time. NU,
then PITT, and then Va Tech. Of those games, no one is talking with
much optimism about NU and PITT (the fans, that is). Both games are
viewed as yardstick games--how close are we to those teams, but no real
talk of upsets. The PITT game is the one generating cautious optimism.
Pitt comes off a game with Notre Dame and will be looking ahead to the
'Huskers. The Pitt game is here, students will be back, and Peden
stadium is expected to set an attendance record with 500 new season
tickets sold already. Those who have talked with Frank "behind the
scenes" (i.e., various administrators on campus) get the impression that
Frank wants to get through the non-conference schedule without injury or
psychological setbacks and then compete in the MAC.

Can Ohio keep pace? Word about practices is very subdued. Not a single
practice has been open. There is rumor that our offensive line (a real
problem for last year's team) is much better, but the yardstick for
comparison is pretty short. Our QB is decent and we have a good RB. I
am excited for the season and would love to come out of Evanston with a
win (sorry Mike!), but in terms of the non-conference schedule
everyone's dream is to beat Pitt because that would energize local fans
who have tended to show up to games only to see our awesome marching band.
