I think you are mistaken and here is evidence. NU was perceived
to be struggling in the early 1990s: SI ran as story about the end
of the NU dynasty, fans were grumbling about Osborne never winning the
big games, and the DN called on Osborne to step down. At that time,
there were non-conference games that sold out only because some
companies were willing to buy some blocks of tickets. That was when
NU was winning 9 games a season. That can be done for a few games or
even a year or two, but it isn't going to work for long.
If NU loses a couple more games this year, I think that the streak
could end next year when the new seats become available. Even if
those new seats are purchased next year, I don't think the sellout
streak will survive if NU does not improve by then end of next year.
NU fans are great at supporting a winning program. The sellout streak
is more a testament to the long-running success of the program than
the fans being willing support the program no matter how well they
play.
