Over the many years of membership on the list, I still find the HL
membership very knowledgeable. Thus, I turn to you for help.

A question of some marginal importance arose from a colleague regarding OT
rules in college football.
We know that for Division I-A, 1996 was the first year of OT.
At some point (2001?), the rules were modified such that at the 3OT level,
2-point conversions were required.
The question: How many coin tosses occur during OT and has that changed
since 1996?
I believe the present rules state something like:
"The loser of the toss shall exercise the remaining option for the first
extra period and shall have the first choice of the two options (offense
or defense) for subsequent
even-numbered extra periods."
Thus, this implies 1 coin toss for all of overtime.
Can anyone shed light on this? And when did the 3OT rule take effect?

Thanks a bunch.
