It's a painful loss for sure, but it would be hard to dismiss the positive
signs.
This team my have just found themselves in an overtime win and a terrific
comeback that felt so much like a victory that at game's end all you could
do is stare incredulously at the scoreboard.
Overcoming 5 turnovers and a 21-0 deficit that made it look as though
Tech's #1 rated offense was running completely unopposed in practice
drills; to turn it around and make a 31-6 run until the final Tech
offensive play was very impressive, and very different from the recent
past. The comeback was even more impressive when you consider that those 6
points came not on offensive drives, but rather by turnovers that gave Tech
the ball in field-goal range.
You can just feel the increased confidence and resolve of this team. It's
as if everything is not only coming together technically in all 3 phases of
the game -- but more importantly, emotionally in terms of belief in oneself
and in the team as a whole.
If this team does return to the field of elites over the coming two years,
I think we might look back at the overtime success against Iowa St. and the
very near comeback victory today as the moment where mediocrity was finally
shed.
Of course the next test will be to see if this team can play with such
passion and self-assurance when adversity hits them on the road.
If they should pass that test, they just might end up being a top 25 team
this year, with an even brighter future ahead.
If nothing else, this team has been very fun to watch the last two weeks.
