Subject: [Husker] Straw Poll
Let's do a straw poll of listers and see who would actually attend any
of these
bowls.
OK, this sounds like fun. First of all, I am a father of two girls,
both teens, and only one is mildly interested in going to football
games. My wife, born and bred in Bellevue, could care less about Husker
football other than the stores tend to be less crowded on football
Saturdays (but with fewer games on TV this year, the stores have been
more crowded). That means if I go to a bowl game (never been but would
love to), I have to find things for the rest of the family to do, too.
So my ability to go to a bowl depends much less on who we play and much
more on what's there for them to do while I'm in some football frenzy
for a day.
Holiday (San Diego) - I'd love to go to San Diego for the Holidays
(and Bowl) but won't for two reasons - 1) its a bit expensive to go to
San Diego from Omaha, at any time of the year, let alone Christmas, and
2) there's no way the Huskers will be there to play.
Orlando - This is probably the only real shot I have at getting to a
bowl game, if I can convince all the girls (only one of whom would
consider going to the game) that a few more days at Disney World would
be worth it - we were just there in October and I only got on the Tower
of Terror once - bummer.
San Antonio - I've been to San Antonio and its a great venue - lots of
things to do and see, great places to eat, but again, this isn't
someplace the Huskers will play this year. No chance.
Shreveport - Despite the fact that Steve Sipple, sports writer for the
Lincoln rag, swears by Shreveport as a great place for a bowl, I have
my serious doubts. And again, this one is rather doubtful for the
Huskers. Possible, but not likely.
Fort Worth - what the h*&^ is in Fort Worth worth going to, other than
the Huskers? Can someone fill me in? I'll admit my lack of
Texas-smarts, which for the longest time I took as a good sign.
Now, if I were to be allowed to take off work, abandon my family and
go to a bowl game with a bunch of other fans (and promise not to have
too much fun) over Christmas, I think I'd seriously consider Orlando,
Houston (which wasn't on this list, but its quite possible and TCU just
accepted the other bid), and San Antonio as my first choices. But the
chances of that, like the chances of the Huskers playing in San Diego
this year, are slim to none, and Slim just packed his bags.
