Since it was not a redshirt,  one could play both. So if one was a FR team player (often scheduled on non-home weekends)
then he could play in a home game, picking up mopup duty.  Back when NU would play 75 or 100 players in a 
game.  Serious blowouts only.

IIRC,  Lance Lundberg (OL) was one of the last varsity starters to play on the FR team.
