> In a story that is breaking out of Manhattan, Kansas tonight, Kansas State Coach Bill Snyder will announce his retirement at his weekly press conference tomorrow. No further details are available at this time. You can check out www.ksu-sports.com, tomorrow for more information.

This comes as a bit of a shock, though I thought at least once during the
season that it looked he was just going through the motions this year,
that spark just didn't seem to be there.

ESPN.com may have the right tag line for his career: he took KSU to
the cusp of a national championship contender. (The same thing would
probably have been said about Tom Osborne had he retired after his 17th
season.)

Like Gary Barnett at Northwestern, he's going to be a tough act to follow,
because expectations have been raised. (I think if we took a vote on the
Northwestern list, Randy Walker would be out this year, despite posting
three consecutive 6 win seasons and taking the Cats to their 2nd bowl in
3 years this year.)

The list of coaches who worked for Snyder is lengthy, I'd consider that
the starting point for any possible replacements. Mike Stoops comes to
mind, for example.

I think I can virtually guarantee that Houston Nutt will NOT be on KSU's
short list, or Dave Wannstedt. :-)
