I don't think burning the redshirt by playing Beck was the worst move,
especially if the game, and possibly a winning season, was on the line. The
bad move was not giving Beck any game experience all season. Seems like very
short-sighted thinking. As porous as the line has been and the beating
Taylor has taken all year, it was no surprise when he went down. It's the
way they do it in the pros, but in college you need to give the second team
guy some playing time. Beck's lack of game experience almost cost us the
game when he threw the interception. Fortunately, the kids came through.
Ross fighting for those extra yards on first down allowed them to get a
first down with three straight running plays. That set up the first down
pass that Beck completed. Those plays were a real team effort after a
frustrating second half.
As to Derek's point about Beck playing being a positive for recruits, it's a
good point, but I think some recruits will see it positively - see, you get
to play; and others will see it negatively - see, they don't care about you,
they cost Beck the whole year and he only got to play a few snaps. There was
a line to this effect from Leon Jackson. He said his high school coach was
upset that they didn't redshirt him and he only got to play on special
teams, and that's a lot more than Beck got to play.
The bottom line is winning. If they continue to play around 500 ball next
season all these things will be part of a long list of negatives. If they
are winning and contending for championships, all that will be forgotten.
Some may complain when Beck doesn't have another year, but not if Freeman or
some other blue chip player (currently in high school) is replacing him, and
looking just as good.
