Anyone remember the Arizona State game in 1996? 3 safeties, less
offense, though obviously against a better team.
Burning the redshirt this late was unfortunate, and perhaps unnecessary.
I thought we'd try to run the clock out as much as possible, even if we
went 3 & out, so I figured Ganz was the right choice since you don't
need Beck to handoff. But Callahan had the mindset (according to
Norvell after the game) that if the game was on the line and Taylor got
hurt, Beck would go in, and that's what it was. You can't pick when
your starting QB gets hurt. If we'd burned the shirt earlier in the
year just to get Beck some time --and it wouldn't have been much since
most games have been close--and Taylor never went down, wouldn't people
be screaming about wasting it for no reason? At least this was with a
game on the line. Hopefully Beck will get some snaps vs. CU and in the
bowl game. If nothing else, he got this experience and a chance to come
back after a critical mistake.
Look at it another way. If Beck is all-world, maybe he would jump to
the NFL before spending 5 years on campus. What did VT gain by
redshirting Michael Vick since he left early? Likewise Vince Young
could leave after this year (sounds like he won't) and make his redshirt
year completely lost.
With a bowl game and a winning season on the line, and maybe his own
job, I think Callahan had to play the best QB available. You want to
complain, how about throwing so much with an untested freshman and a 2
point lead?
