If I recall, both Okie State and Missouri had pretty good teams/seasons the
year they broke the streaks. Don't think we ever had a 25-year streak
against Iowa State unless you mean at home, since Tommie and company lost to them
in Ames in '92. When they beat us the first time under Solich they had Seneca
Wallace and one of the Davis brothers, younger one I think. They went to a
bowl game too.
This loss was to a mediocre team by an embarassing score. I will say this
for Frank, he did a pretty good job of beating the teams he was supposed to
beat. How many of his losses were to teams that didn't make a bowl that
season? I suspect very few, and we never approached last place in the North
division, even at 7-7.
The 1992 loss at Iowa St was the only game Osborne ever lost to a team that
finished below .500 in 25 seasons. (307 games).
No, Frost didn't howl at those other losses, at least not publicly, but I
would suggest they were not quite as painful. We were in a down season with a
QB who didn't see any significant playing time the year before even when we
were blowing teams out, and had the weakest pass protection I had seen at NU
in at least 20 years, up to that point, which made it more difficult for him to
sit in the pocket and make decent throws.
This season, and last, have been characterized by losses that should not
have happened. Last season it was S Miss, Iowa State, and Colorado. This year
we have losses to Missouri and Kansas, who I believe we have better players
than. Given their performances against other teams, there is no reason that
we should have given up the points we did to them.
I think that is the big difference right now, NU is losing to what most
people see as inferior athletes, and BC seems to be more intent on forcing his
system than game-planning to take advantage of each particular opponents
defensive weaknesses.
I sure hope we beat K State, because last place in the division just isn't
right for the Huskers. Come on boys, win one for yourselves and all of the
guys who came before you and made that N what it is!!!
GO BIG RED!!!!!
