+I assume this means competing for players who are only being recruited by
+schools like Kansas and Washington State. NU's most recent commitment, Mike
+Smith (DE/TE, Las Vegas), was offered a scholarship by UNLV and Oregon State
+only, other than NU. Will he be able to compete in the Big XII? The coaches
+obviously think he will. Adam Carriker (from Washington) was offered only by
+Washington State, Oregon State, Oregon and Idaho and he turned out to be a
very +good player. Recruiting rankings are entertaining but result vary
greatly.

I was thinking of the likes of Marlon Lucky, Barry Turner, Brooks, and Harrison
Beck that were chased by the top programs. These are the players, particularly
in the pro-style offense that will get you to the BCS bowlstravaganza. Do your
homework. Why did OU sack NU 9 times and Peterson run all over NU with one
good leg? Look at the athletes at Texas and Southern Cal. Consistently a
level above the rest of DI. It isn't tough to figure out that a program MUST
compete with these schools for athletes in order to reach that level. It would
be great if the local boys and project athletes could get it done but they
won't.

Regardless of the circumstances (new coach, playing time, etc) a guy like
Callahan (with Blake) and Pete Carol will attract high caliber athletes. One
downfall that I see is the persistent whining from the Husker fans. The fan
base and enthusiasm at games has been oft cited as a reason for recruits
chosing NU. If the coach is under fire and his status in doubt, forget about
it.

This morning the LJS ran a great piece on Steve Octavian and how he is
recovering from his shoulder surgery, pins in his broken fibula and a torn knee
ligament. He got a medical redshirt and plans to come back next year better
than ever. And I hear all this pissing and moaning around Lincoln and
cyberspace about how people don't like this and don't like that. That Callahan
isn't family and is going to kill the program. That Pederson is this and that.
I don't believe it. Perhaps NU should drop the head coaching position
altogether and let all those experts coach by committee. College football had
passed Solich by.
